Maugham HSA Committees
The HSA runs many events throughout the year. Our committees range from community events, to student activities and teacher appreciation support.
If a committee requires use of the school building or grounds, a Facility Use Form must be completed and sent to Ms Wash for principal and district approval at least 30 days before the event.

2023 - 2024 Committee Descriptions
Maugham offers a wide variety of committees to support our students throughout the year.
ARTS & CULTURE
This committee sources assemblies, festivals and any other medium to expose Maugham students to arts and culture. In the past, this has included coordinating with the art teacher to arrange the children’s art work throughout the school for a Fine Arts Festival as well as coordinating the variety show. This committee will also be organizing school-wide celebrations of various heritage and cultural celebrations through decorations, books and other materials throughout the year. The committee organizes flowers for performers and often refreshments for performers and audiences.

BEAUTIFICATION & ENVIRONMENT
Throughout the year, this committee works to beautify, maintain and improve the interior, grounds and landscaping of Maugham school as well as plan activities in celebration of for Earth Day, Arbor Day or other environmental friendly events.

BOOK FAIR
Maugham school holds two (2) book fairs each year correlating with parent-teacher conferences (usually in December and March). The committee chairs organize the delivery of the books, the set-up of the book fair, publicity, gathering volunteers to assist the children during the book fair and organizing teachers to select books for their classrooms.

CLUBS
Clubs at Maugham are HSA sponsored, after-school enrichment classes that offer a fun way for students to enjoy learning or doing something new while spending time with friends. The Club’s committee sets the class schedule for each 12 week session, coordinates online registration, oversees the payment collection and works with our treasurers to keep records accurate. Committee members also maintain close communication with teacher instructors and outside vendors.

CLASS PARENTS
This committee coordinates the selection and organization of class parents as well as makes suggestions for class parent involvement in events and school activities and supervises the class kitty process (distribution, collection, reimbursements).

FALL & SPRING EVENTS
The committee plans two events each school year at the school for Maugham families. The Fall Event is an outdoor party on a weekend afternoon in October. The Spring event is a Thursday evening event in mid May. The committee organizes food, arts & crafts and outdoor games & activities as well as the volunteers, publicity of the event and ticket sales.

FIELD DAY
The Field Day committee provides water and cups for Field Day. They also secure volunteers and communicate with Mr. Camizzi (P.E. teacher) regarding timing and rain delays (when needed).

FIFTH GRADE
The 5th grade chair position acts as lead liaison between the 5th grade families, HSA and teachers. This chair position connects all the 5th grade sub committees back to a central place. The chair helps to coordinate and facilitate the 5th grade activities and fundraisers.

TEF
The Tenafly Education Fund is a non-profit organization that raises funds to support grants requested by Tenafly Public School teachers for innovative programs and projects that further enrich the academic and creative experience in our schools. The Maugham Representative attends the TEF meetings, reports back to the Maugham community and drive participation in the annual TEF 5K.

INTERNATIONAL DAY
International Day has been a Maugham School tradition for many years. This is a two-day event traditionally held in March. One day is dedicated to an Assembly of performances and a Lunch Buffet related to the host country. On the second day this committee organizes a Festival of Tables where family/friend volunteers prepare tables representing between 10 - 15 countries and Maugham students circulate enjoying activities and food representing.

LUNCH & NUTRITION
This committee liaises with school management on the school lunch program. Prior to COVID, this committee also managed parent lunch volunteers to help out during the three lunch periods on Fridays This committee also raises awareness about relevant health and fitness issues that affect and concern our children and families.

MAUGHAM WEAR
This committee designs, orders and sells fun Maugham School wear at the beginning of school year and in advance of sprit week.

READ-A-THON
The Read-a-Thon in the winter each year to promote reading and raise funds for improvements and enhancements to Maugham School. The committee is responsible for the setting up of the read-a-thon, publicity and prize selection and distribution.

SCHOOL PLAY
Maugham has had a long tradition of grade level school plays and this committee is exploring bringing back a school play in the spring (grades 3 - 5). This committee would work with teachers, who have committed to this project, to coordinate sets, costumes, as well as day-of support while the teachers coach the students in rehearsals. There is interest among students and teachers to see this tradition restored but we do need a committee of parents to support these efforts.

SUPPLIES
This committee works with the HSA Executive Board, Dr. Ferrara and the Maugham School teachers to determine what they need for both indoor and outdoor recess. They check in at least twice during the year and place orders accordingly. This committee also works with the teachers in March of each year to update their supply lists for the following year. They then contact the supplier to get quotes and set up the online ordering system. All school supplies are shipped directly to the student’s home address.

TEACHER/STAFF APPRECIATION
This committee organizes tokens of appreciation on various specific appreciation days but generally organizes teacher appreciation events three times a year: during parent/teacher conferences in fall and spring as well as during teacher appreciation week in May.
This committee solicits volunteers to bring food, coordinate the menu items, arrange for set up in the teachers' lounge and clean-up during the parent/teacher conference potluck. During Appreciation Week in May, the committee coordinates breakfast, luncheon and other creative ideas to show our Teachers we appreciate them!

VARIETY SHOW
This committee puts on the annual variety show and tasks include helping with rehearsals (3), producing the program and compiling the music as well as decoratimg and running the concession stand.

WEBMASTER
The Maugham website is constantly improving and changing. This committee can divide the duties monthly to make sure relevant information is on the website. (For instance, club information, lunch information and Maugham Events are updated as needed.)

This committee plans different projects and events to help welcome those families that are new to Maugham. If you like meeting new people then this is the committee for you!

Friends of Maugham HSA
CAP
Palisades Triborough CAP is an alliance between Alpine, Englewood Cliffs, and Tenafly, tasked with messaging and distribution of funds for initiatives that provide programs for educating the communities regarding underage substance abuse prevention. Maugham has a CAP Representative that attends the CAP meetings and reports back to the Maugham community at HSA meetings.
CHINESE PARENTS' ASSOCIATION
As a representative of Chinese parents in Tenafly, the Association establishes liaisons in each of the four elementary schools, the middle school, and the high school. The Association has created a WeChat group for the entire Chinese population in Tenafly and organized various activities in the community.

KOREAN PARENTS' ASSOCIATION
The KPA's mission is to promote goodwill and cooperation between Korean parents in Tenafly and its schools and civic organizations. Some of its activities include: sponsoring appreciation luncheons for school staff, supporting international events at elementary schools and hosting an annual Lunar New Year Celebration Event.

PASET
Parent Association for Special Education in Tenafly—This representative attends the monthly meetings with the PASET members from all the schools in Tenafly and then meets with the Assistant to the Superintendent for Special Services to gather relevant information for our students in Special Education. The representative then attends the HSA meeting to report what occurred.
